4/15/08 -- BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Maine Dept. of Transportation (MDOT) employee Mike Landry cuts away a section of steel beam from the overpass over Route 1 at Cook's Corner on Tuesday afternoon. The bridge is being repaired because it was struck by a vehicle which exceeded the clearance of the bridge in November, 2007. MDOT Project Engineer Bill Doukas expects bridge reconstruction to be completed by Memorial Day weekend. The $500,000 project was funded entirely by the insurance settlement of the vehicle which hit the bridge. This bridge, with 14 feet seven inches of clearance, has been hit three times in the last three years according to Doukas. With this in mind MDOT is planning to add an early warning alarm system which would alert drivers of oversized vehicles if their load's height exceeded the clearance of the bridge. The system is planned to be operational by this summer. Photo by Roger S. Duncan.
