  • 4/15/08 -- BRUNSWICK, Maine -- work over Route 1 at Cook's Corner...Maine Dept of transportation (DOT) Project Engineer Bill Doukas expects bridge reconstruction to be completed by Memorial Day weekend. The $500,000 project was funded entirely by the insurance settlement of the vehicle which hit the bridge back in November 2007. This bridge, with 14 feet seven inches of clearance, has been hit three times in the last three years according to Doukas. With this in mind DOT is planning to add an early warning alarm system which would alert drivers of oversized vehicles if their load exceeded the clearance height of the underpass. The system is planned to be started by the time bridge reconstruction is completed. Photo by Roger S. Duncan.

  • September 6, 2008 -- NAS BRUNSWICK, Maine. The smoke cloud from a pyrotechnics display rises above the flight line at NAS Brunswick on Saturday as part of The Great State of Maine Airshow. Due to increasingly bad weather on Saturday, visitation reached only 50,000 -- and The Blue Angels cancelled their Saturday demonstration. The airshow visited Naval Air Station Brunswick for the last time this weekend, bringing The U.S. Navy Blue Angels, The U.S. Army Golden Knights and a wide variety of static displays and interactive exhibits. The show drew over 150,000 people over three days with no mishaps among the performers and no emergencies among the attendees. .Because NAS Brunswick is scheduled to be closed in 2011 by the Base Realignment Commission, there will not be another Navy-sponsored airshow at this location. Yet, the Local Redevelopment Authority, responsible for managing the property after the departure of the Navy, has included an airshow on a list of possible future uses for the property. • October 6, 2007 -- BATH, Maine. Violet Fraser, 5, of Bath tries apple bobbing for the first time at Gediman's in Bath on Saturday afternoon during Autumnfest. "You just have to go underwater," she said of her technique. "And, pushing the apple against the side helps too." Patty Bellavance, manager at Gediman's hosted the event, and said, "I was afraid it was too old fashioned." But by the end of the afternoon, more than 14 children (at heart) had successfully bobbed for apples. Photo by Roger S. Duncan.

He and a small group of diggers cut through the ice at low water to dig here. .Quahog Bay was reopened for digging on Feb 11 2011 after many years of closure, according to Department of Marine Resources Biotoxin Monitoring Manager, Darcie Couture. She wrote, "This area had been closed for many years due to failing water quality, caused by bacterial pollution. A serious pollution source was recently identified and remediated. The area will close in June for the summer, because unfortunately, this area, like many others on the Maine coast, suffer from the increased pressure of a seasonal summer population, which negatively impacts water quality, and results in many of our shellfish resources remaining closed to harvest during that time." • September 7, 2008 -- NAS BRUNSWICK, Maine. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels gave a rousing performance to over 100,000 guests on Sunday afternoon at The Great State of Maine Airshow. Their performance on Saturday was cancelled due to low cloud cover. <br />
Because NAS Brunswick is scheduled to be closed in 2011 by the Base Realignment Commission, there will not be another Navy-sponsored airshow at this location. Yet, the Local Redevelopment Authority, responsible for managing the property after the departure of the Navy, has included an airshow on a list of possible future uses for the property.
