From left,  #97 Mike O'Donnell of Fairfield, Conn in his Nissan Altima, #43 Paul Glynn of Mass. in his 1987 VW Jetta and #23 Jeremy Hasbrouck of Berwick, ME in his 1997 Saturn SL2.   • 4/18/10 -- BRUNSWICK, Maine. Doug Kennedy and Mauka, 6, of Harpswell raced alongside competitors during the 7th annual 'Save Our Swinging Bridge 5K' on Sunday morning. Kennedy said, "I did it for the dog! " Runners aged 7- 73 ran  ran across the 118-year-old Roebling-built suspension bridge, connecting Topsham and Brunswick between morning rain showers. Race Director Nancy Randolph said, "I guarantee the weather! And look - dry pavement for the runners!" Top finishers received restaurant coupons and accolades from fellow runners.  Photo by Roger S.   • 5/31/09 -- BATH, Maine. Jen Rohde of Cumberland closes in on the finish line at the Bath Y Tri on Sunday morning. The Triathalon drew nearly 200 participants and over 100 volunteers to the Bath YMCA. Winners were Kurt Perham for the men and Alicia Trott, both of Brunswick.   • 2/10/08 -- BRUNSWICK, Maine. Georgiana Peacher of Brunswick  holds up an "Obama for Me" bumper sticker at her Democratic Caucus on Sunday afternoon. 1326 people voted (with their feet) at the Brunswick Middle School in the middle of a whiteout snowstorm. In Brunswick, Sen. Barack Obama (Dem-Ill) finished with 48 delegates and Sen. Hillary Clinton (Dem-NY) took 19. In Bath, Topsham and Harpswell and in the state as a whole, Obama also won. Incumbent Democrat, Alex Cornell du Houx  greets a voter coming to the at the polls on Tuesday afternoon..Turnout across the region at the polls was high -- according to several different candidates. They each said that due to close races at many different levels, it appeared that voters came out more than they might otherwise have. Traffic flowed through the polls steadily throughout the day.   • April 18, 2009 -- BATH, Maine. Bill Guess of Trenton, Maine reaches out to ring a bell while competing in a tree climbing competition in Library Park in Bath on Saturday afternoon. Six professional arborists from around New England raced against each other in several different events. In this event climbers had to ring several bells placed in different parts of the same tree. The climber to achieve the fastest time won. Organizer Tim Lindsay of Scarborough said, "It's a fun event and we are a supportive community . . .  we learn and are able to share best practices in safety -- while still competing against each other. Seth Moody, a professional arborist from Caribou and Camden Maine climbs 42 feet straight up to a ring a bell while competing in a tree climbing competition in Library Park in Bath on Saturday afternoon. Six professional arborists from around New England raced against each other in several different events. In this event climbers had to hoist themselves up the rope using a technique known as "footlock"  because they shim up a harness rope by wrapping it over their foot and sliding a chair up to the top. Competitor Bear Scovil of Manchester Vt. said, "This event requires more agility than it does strength. You'll see the best climbers develop a rhythm of swinging back and forth as they move up the rope."   Organizer Tim Lindsay of Scarborough said, "It's a fun event and we are a supportive community . . .  we learn and are able to share best practices in safety -- while still competing against each other.   • 4/27/11 -- BRUNSWICK, Maine. Eliot Pitney, Coach of Bowdoin Women's Crew, drills his team on the new Meadows river in late April. Pitney has coached at Bowdoin for the last 4 years. and before that at Bates.  "This time of year," he says, " I'm ready to quit -- I'm just exhausted. But, give me a week off and then I'm right back at it -- ready to go for fall!"  Pitney, also working on a  Master's in Mechanical Engineering puts in about 12 hours a week on the water - not including trips to and from races. "It gets in your blood," he says of rowing.
